Hiring Our Veterans

Are you looking to add valuable talent to your team? As Veteran’s Day has just passed, this may be a good time to consider hiring a veteran for that open position. Many Veterans have a wealth of skills, knowledge, and professional experience that come from their time in the military. In addition, there are government incentives for businesses that hire veterans:

The government offers the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. Under section 51 of the Internal Revenue Code by hiring a veteran you can obtain a general business credit. WOTC is equal to 40% of up to $6,000 in wages as long the employee is in their first year of employment, a certified member of the targeted group, and performs at least 400 hours of services for that employer.

The U.S Department of Veteran Affairs offers Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E). VR&E works with employers to match veterans for successful career. They offer incentives such as providing Assistive Technology to support veterans in performing their duties in their new civilian position. Through the Special Employer Incentive program employers are encouraged to hire Veterans facing extraordinary obstacles to employment which can include reimbursement of as much as 50 percent of the Veteran’s salary for up to six months.

Veterans come with a wealth of experience, skills, and knowledge. In the military, their mission at hand never rests. These people must be highly focused and dedicated to the job they are performing while being able to adapt and change gears for any situation. To ensure they are successful they must have incredible organizational skills and translate well into the civilian world. Veterans are used to working in a team and individually. Due to the hierarchical structure veterans are often used to taking on extra responsibilities and assuming leadership roles. Veteran employees may have a higher natural ability to mentors others, grow in your company and make strategic decisions due to their experience serving.

If you are interested in hiring a Veteran, contact your Regional Veterans’ Employment coordinator. On the U.S Department of Labor’s website if you select your state from the drop-down menu, it will find a representative in your area. They will be able to refer you to available applicants and guide you through the process of signing up for VA Support.
